Clarity and Recovery with Yoruba by Luz Gutierrez As of July 16h I was seven days clean of my crack addiction, having been on, and off; in and out,-- of recovery for many years. Many things were going wrong in my life though, including a family real estate deal that was submerged in rivalry and bad attitudes, and no luck at all regarding my long standing Public Assistance and Federal disability claims. Needless to say, my usual social agencies, psychiatrist, and social workers were not improving any of this. But I was scheduled to visit a real Yoruba Practitioner, named Carmen Maria at a basement healing meeting at her Lower East Side home. All I knew about this was that attendees were requested to wear some items of lavender color. The scheduled time of the meeting was at 11:00AM, which I learned was relevant to the quality of healing, as was the ceremonial content, which I was instructed, would direct me to take certain herbs to help with problems in the area of money, inheritance, and unseen “enemies.” The roots of the practice of Yoruba, which is known as a religion in Nigeria, Africa, developed into the healing discipline named Santeria, generally practiced in the Caribbean in 1517, when African Slaves in Cuba had their first taste of mandatory Catholicism. So, in response to this, healing ceremonies learned in Africa took on some appearance of Roman Catholic worship. The herb man looks after the sick. In this role he also divines the future, and determines what sacrifices, prayer offerings, and other acts and preventions are determined to reach good or evil orishas (or spirits) to resolve spiritual obstructions. Sacrifices or “gifts” for Santeras involve animals, tobacco, fruits, body cleansings, rum, and glass containers. Each spirit or orisha has different healing attributes. Their dates of potency are: Obatala- September 24 Eleggua- June 13 Chango- December 4 Ogun- Jun 29 Orunla- October 14 Yemaya- September 7 Oshun - September 8 There are 97 healing Santeras, or Orishas, each with different attributes and specializations. In Cuba the healing practice is known as Santeria, In Puerto Rico it is known as Espiritismo. Many other ablutions and ideations are imbedded in Catholic Churches in Caribbean and Latin American countries. In the beginning of all ceremonies however, ancestors are PAID. In the ceremony I attended we were seated on mats covering the floor, on which we placed fruits, vegetables, and the sacrificial animals we brought to the ceremony. Ceremonies all begin on Saturdays and end Sunday mornings. We were advised that “orishas need to be fed because if the priest, or BABALAWO, as he or she is called, makes mistakes, or “screws up” the ceremony, it is believed that well-fed orishas will be more consumer friendly. It is said, though, that if the asentido, or blood ceremony, is done incorrectly people could become very sick, or even die. In order to address the orishas correctly, however, all their attributes must be addressed correctly, including their Saintly names, and pertaining colors, sacrificial animals, sacrificial foods, herbs, apalaki, and ornaments. As a further prevention of negative influences it is recommended that subjects to be healed put a clear glass of water in the corners of their homes; and that they smoke cigars and light sanctified Black Incense charcoal cakes on Saturdays. Subjects may also be guided to place requests about negative influences to be removed, or petitions for blessings in coconuts to be thrown into local rivers. PEACE AND RESOLUTION OF MY ISSUES As I noted, when I began my meditations with Sr. Maria Carmen I was having considerable difficulty retaining my Social Security, and Public Assistance benefits; and I was becoming plagued with evasions and excuses regarding the house my siblings and other relatives were selling, in Puerto Rico—which was somehow never including me in whatever profits were accruing. Even their lawyer was evasive, and kept changing his stories regarding the sale of this property. |

Of course we also discussed the 18-year odyssey of e-CSW.com proprietor George Brown, through the quicksand bog we try to call health care in the U.S. This story is not over yet, and it certainly illustrates the arrogance and craziness of our medical industry—apart from the flaws in our medical coverage system. To bring all readers up to date on this incredible comedy of errors, Brown was the victim of an amateurishly designed poison attempt by a totally mad friend, whom he discovered, all too late, was a dilettante Santeria practitioner with a nightmare medicine chest. But as readers will recall, the rest of the story involved a wild history of self serving, brainlessly conservative, or simply incompetent medical facility blunders-- related to our medical industry’s inability to respect science, or its own recorded observations, when dealing with academically irregular symptoms. Notably, of course, this terrible state of affairs continues, -- as we all try to navigate our present day patch-work quilt of new-age health applications, --ranging from Oriental Medical technologies, to vitamins, advanced enzymes, anti-oxidants, chemically enhanced fatty proteins, etc. and the ubiquitous recommendations from Grandma, and her friends, which we always find were really the precursors to all this other stuff. KO'S COMPANY: A REVERENTIAL REVIEW OF "KNOCKOUT" BY SUZANNE SOMERS Despite its pop-culture DNA, it is our judgement that best-seller expose book, KNOCKOUT, by former sitcom comic Suzanne Somers, should, definitely be mandated to the reference book shelves of every healthcare office in our society, alongside the Physicians' Desk Reference, Diagnostic Statistical Clinical Manual of Mental Health, Gray's Anatomy, and the Physicians' Marketing Guide for Insurance Covered Surgeries. Of course we are very certain that cancer-care survivor Somers, the formerly goofy, Chrissy Snow character, from TV sitcom, Three's Company, who also wrote "Eat Great Lose Weight," Get Skinny on Fabulous Food," "Eat, Cheat, and Melt the Fat Away," would be truly amazed to know we're recommending her current book for the International Medical Office Prerequisit list. More to her surprise, however, while we're at it, we would also recommend archival preservation of this volume in the Smithsonian, and the library of Congress;--in addition to hundreds of circulating copies, generally, to be sent to all Public Libraries on our planet! But, on the other hand, we know that if e-CSW.com was publishing during the European Renaissance. we would have been as enthusiastic about Gallileo's books on the relative positioning, and gravitational influences, of Earth and Sun, in our planetary system. So we really hope we are not aiding and abetting a witch-hunt here. However in any case, we want e-CSW.com readers to know that at this site, and particularly, in our new STORE function, we will be filing all of the 400+ highlighted clinics, foundations, and practitioners, reviewed by Ms. Somers, in our data base of digitally available health resources. Notably, we'll be doing this just to be absolutely certain that all services from these amazing health care providers, all interviewed, or categorically referenced in Ms. Somers milestone book, are entirely accessiible to our readers and clients. KNOCKOUT'S listed Practitioners range from Dr. James Forsythe, former University of Nevada Professor, and state-wide Admuinistrator of of Oncology Services, now a practicing Homeopath, to many well-certified physicians, including iconic Sloane-Kettering Physician Dr. Nichoilas Gonzales, and others, who became adherents of incredibly effective research, advanced by an "eccentric," cancer-breaking former Dentist, named Dr. William Donald Kelley. Dr. Kelly, who has literally "saved" many lives, created a bio-chemically plausible treatment regimen including massive fruit intake, among other balanced food reqjuirements, an initial p.o daily intake of 1/2 cup of high quality olive oil, and daily enemas derived from a dilute solution of ordinary percolated coffee! Obviously not all of Ms. Somers highlighted practitioners, or enumerated clinics and services, are this far outside the box. However they all feature demonstrably successul alternative, complementary, or supportive, pre-surgical, or immune-system based, cancer-curing implementations--which have all been tactically underplayed, or discredited, by the proponenets of more expensive, and not entirely effective, med-pharm industry "mainstream" procedures. As predicted, my meditations also gave me a dream in which a shadowy form that gave me chills, and looked a little like a daughter-in- law I’ve always disliked, was indicated to be the person subverting my benefits from the sale of my grandmother’s house. Now I can’t speak to how any of this works, but I can say that it all made me feel calm , confident, and successful; and it certainly helped me more than the social workers and medical people I’d been seeing without any success. |
